What to Expect When Working with Shoshanna Richek, Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Counselor

Reaching out to a functional nutritionist can feel like a big step, especially if you have already tried several diets, received different recommendations, or worked with multiple healthcare providers. You may wonder what you will be asked, whether you will need to change everything you eat, or whether you will leave the first conversation with a long list of rules.

Every practitioner works somewhat differently. When you work with me, the process begins with understanding you as a whole person. Food is an important part of the conversation, but it is not the only part. We also look at your health history, symptoms, sleep, stress, movement, environment, relationships, medications, previous experiences, daily routines, and the patterns that may be influencing your choices.

The goal is not to judge what you have been doing. The goal is to understand what is happening, connect information that may have seemed separate, and determine which realistic changes may support you best.

The First Conversation Is About Understanding You

The first conversation is an opportunity for us to get to know each other. I want to understand why you are reaching out, what concerns you most, what you have already tried, and what you would like to be different in your life. You do not need to arrive with perfectly organized records or know exactly what kind of support you need. You may simply know that you are tired, frustrated, confused, or ready to approach your health differently.

We will discuss what you are experiencing and determine whether my approach is a good match for your needs. This also gives you an opportunity to ask questions, understand how I work, and decide whether you feel comfortable moving forward.

A complimentary conversation is not about convincing you that you need another program. It is an opportunity to explore whether functional nutrition and lifestyle support will give you the guidance you believe will help you get to the root causes and make the difference you desire.

You Will Be Asked to Share the Whole Picture

If we decide to work together, I will ask you to provide information about more than your current diet. Your health did not develop in a vacuum, and your food choices do not happen separately from the rest of your life. We will likely explore areas such as:

  • Your current concerns and health goals

  • Food, beverages, meal timing, and eating patterns

  • Energy, sleep, digestion, cravings, and mood

  • Stress, responsibilities, and major life experiences

  • Exercise, movement, pain, or physical limitations

  • Your home, work, and social environments

  • Medications, supplements, and current medical care

  • Relationships and the support available to you

  • Previous diets, programs, and health recommendations

  • Emotional, behavioral, or subconscious patterns

You may notice that some of these questions seem unrelated at first. As we continue the conversation, connections begin to appear. Poor sleep may affect cravings and energy. Pain may make movement difficult. Stress may influence digestion, food choices, or the ability to plan ahead. A demanding schedule may make a well-intentioned nutrition plan unrealistic. Looking at the whole picture helps us move beyond general recommendations and begin identifying what may be most relevant to you.

Your Information Becomes a Personalized Blueprint

After reviewing your information, I organize the most important areas into a personalized, one-page, Functional Nutrition Blueprint. This is not meant to be an overwhelming report or a rigid set of instructions. It is a clear, practical summary of the patterns we have identified, the areas that may deserve attention, and the initial steps we can begin exploring together.

Your blueprint will include nutrition and meal-pattern observations, lifestyle considerations, questions for your medical providers, supportive habits, and areas you may want to track more closely. It also helps us prioritize small changes.

When several concerns are present, it is important to agree on where to begin rather than trying to address everything at once. Two people may arrive with similar symptoms but receive very different guidance because their histories, environments, resources, preferences, and barriers are different. Personalized support means that the plan should reflect your life, not require your life to conform to a generic plan.

You Will Not Be Expected to Change Everything at Once

Many people begin a health program believing they will have to remove several foods, create a perfect routine, exercise every day, prepare every meal at home, and immediately stop every habit they want to change. That is not how sustainable change usually happens.

We may identify several areas that could eventually support your health, but we will begin with the changes that feel most useful and manageable. This could mean improving one meal, eating more consistently, adding protein or fiber, creating a more supportive evening routine, noticing a recurring trigger, or preparing one question for an upcoming medical appointment.

A small change gives you an opportunity to practice, observe, and learn. It also gives us information. We can see whether the change fits your life, whether it is supporting the intended goal, and whether it needs to be adjusted.

Sometimes the smallest shifts create the biggest momentum. General nutrition advice can be useful, but it cannot account for your complete health history, lifestyle, symptoms, stressors, medications, preferences, or relationship with food. Two people may have similar goals but need very different approaches.

The goal is not to create a perfect routine or change everything at once. The goal is to identify realistic changes that you can practice, evaluate, and gradually integrate into your life.

You Want to Be More Proactive About Your Health

Functional nutrition is not a process in which I hand you a plan and expect you to follow it perfectly. Your experiences between conversations are part of the process.

You may be asked to pay attention to your energy, meals, cravings, digestion, sleep, stress, movement, symptoms, or emotional responses. You do not need to create a perfect record. The purpose is to gather information that helps us recognize patterns and understand how your body and your life are responding.

During our conversations, I will want to hear what worked, what felt difficult, what you noticed, and what changed. Something that appears simple on paper may not be realistic in practice. Honest communication allows us to adjust the plan instead of treating an obstacle as a personal failure.

The process should remain collaborative. You bring the knowledge of your life and your lived experience. I bring functional nutrition education, lifestyle counseling, pattern recognition, and support. Together, we use that information to choose the next step.

Your Medical Team Remains an Important Part of Your Care

Functional nutrition and lifestyle counseling do not replace medical care. I do not diagnose medical conditions, prescribe medications, or advise you to discontinue treatment recommended by a licensed healthcare professional.

I work alongside your existing medical team. This may be especially helpful if you are seeing several doctors or healthcare professionals and feel as though different parts of your health are being discussed separately. I can help you organize information, identify questions you may want to ask, recognize lifestyle patterns, and follow through on practical nutrition and behavior changes that support the care you are receiving.

When another type of expertise is needed, I will encourage you to speak with the appropriate qualified professional. Whole-person support includes recognizing when collaboration is the best next step.

What Clients Say

  • “Shoshanna has transformed my life. She helped me understand and overcome my emotional and stress eating habits. Instead of labeling food as good or bad, she taught me to focus on how food makes me feel and whether it serves my body.” — Nicole

Nicole’s words demonstrate an important part of the process. The goal was not simply to give her a new list of foods to eat or avoid. It was to help her understand her patterns, look at food differently, and become more aware of what supported her body and her life.

Healthy Habits High Returns® Insight

Knowing what to expect can also affect whether employees feel comfortable using the wellness resources available to them. Many organizations offer health plans, EAP services, wellness portals, screenings, educational programs, and other valuable benefits.

Employees may still feel uncertain about where to begin, which resource applies to them, or how to turn general recommendations into practical daily action.

Healthy Habits High Returns® provides a human-centered layer of support that complements existing medical, wellness, employee health, and EAP resources. The process begins by listening, understanding the whole person, and helping employees connect nutrition, stress, sleep, habits, symptoms, and lifestyle circumstances.

When support feels approachable and relevant to real life, employees may be better equipped to engage with the resources already available to them. This can support employee wellbeing outcomes while helping organizations strengthen wellness program ROI.

How Sho Richek Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Counseling Can Help

My role is helping clients understand what’s getting in the way and supporting them in changing it. I support individuals and organizations through functional nutrition, lifestyle counseling, behavior-based wellness, and a collaborative whole-person approach.

Rather than focusing only on what someone should eat, I help people consider the patterns, stressors, routines, beliefs, symptoms, and circumstances influencing their choices and wellbeing.

I work alongside conventional care and encourage clients to remain connected with their medical providers.

My support can help you organize information, notice patterns, prepare questions, practice realistic changes, and develop healthier habits that support long-term wellbeing.

For organizations, this same human-centered approach can complement existing wellness and employee benefits while supporting engagement, productivity, retention, and healthier daily behaviors.

To explore whether this type of support could be helpful in your life or organization, schedule a complimentary conversation.

In Summary

When you work with a functional nutritionist, you can expect more than a conversation about food. The process may include your health history, symptoms, sleep, stress, movement, relationships, medications, environment, habits, previous experiences, and the circumstances influencing your daily choices.

You can also expect collaboration rather than judgment. The purpose is not to change everything at once or follow a plan perfectly. It is to gather useful information, identify meaningful patterns, create a personalized blueprint, and practice small changes that can be adjusted as you learn more.

Functional nutrition and lifestyle counseling work alongside your existing medical care. With clear communication and realistic expectations, the process can help you better understand yourself, connect the dots, and choose your next supportive step.
